Two areas within the Sintra Parish Council and the Parish Council of Massamá Monte Abraão will function as living laboratories to test a model that aims to promote the reduction of the environmental footprint of services and the increase of bio-waste recycling.
The "i4efficiency - Intelligent Logistics Integration and Efficiency Identifier" project aims to promote service efficiency and CO2 emission reductions from activities associated with urban logistics operations, such as postal distribution, water, electricity and gas services, and also to promote an increase in biowaste recycling rates.
To do this, residents in these areas are being given unique address identifiers (IUE), i.e., a code that unambiguously identifies a physical address that will be used in a variety of ways by residents.
Namely, in the area of logistics efficiency, to pick up orders in the two pilot centers, thus reducing the circulation of vehicles of these companies; for the citizens to manage their interactions with the services, such as scheduling visits in a single place; or even to promote the recycling of bio-waste, to the extent that garbage bags with codes will be distributed, allowing the reading and tracking of the waste produced by this IUE deposited in proper containers.
An online platform will function as an information aggregator, also making available to each IUE its waste production history, the amount of emissions it has already saved by allowing parcel delivery to the logistics center lockers, among other features.
"The project will be tested throughout 2023, but the idea is that the system will be maintained, that is, that the logistics hubs will continue to function and that more companies will use the system," José Paulo Martins, head of ZERO and coordinator of the project, told Negócios.
The two logistics centers to support the activities in both laboratories will be located in the Estefânia market in Sintra and the Massamá market and will have two electric support vehicles.
